What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and integrative medicine and its therapeutic effect can be beneficial in all populations, including elite athletes, students, weekend warriors, and everyone in between.

Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health.

A massage therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan specific to you and your goals. That may include massage, assessment, and carefully selected exercises such as stretching, strengthening and postural corrections that focuses on rehabilitation.

Registered massage therapy is effective in treating and providing relief for a wide range of conditions such as:

  • Headaches, whiplash, or TMJ disorder
  • Muscle imbalances causing pain or dysfunction
  • Pregnancy related pain and discomfort
  • Tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Neurological conditions
  • Sports injuries
  • Post surgical care
  • Lymphedema – primary and secondary
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Anxiety
  • Many other common conditions related to soft tissue and joint dysfunction

About Erica

My passion for health and athletics led me to pursue a career as an RMT. I believe active rehabilitation, including exercise and stretching, along with manual and massage techniques are crucial pieces to a successful and complete recovery. My focus is to not only reduce your pain but to also get you back to enjoying the activities that currently cause you discomfort.

Once a competitive volleyball player, I now spend my time practicing yoga, hiking the North Shore mountains, and strength training. I consider myself a ‘forever student,’ eager to build on my academic foundations in anatomy and physiology and staying up to date with the latest techniques and modalities through CECs and professional development.

Learning and understanding the human body is my passion. Massage Therapy is my calling. Helping people through massage is what I love to do!
